I don't know about you - but there is nothing more rejuvenating than a weekend away on a lake. The sounds of the water lapping the shore, the wildlife, the calming nature of the horizon and of course, the sunsets.
CY and I took our girlfriends for a weekend away at Bluebird Cottage in Orillia to reconnect with nature. On the drive to the cottage we saw an osprey nest (and a watchful osprey) as well as a multitude of turtles, snakes, frogs and even some nesting swans along the bog leading to the cottage. We even got out and soaked in the peaceful songs of the bog on our way to the cottage. This was a great introduction to the cottage too - it truly set the tone for the weekend.
The cottage is located on 100ft of shoreline on Lake St. John. The lake was clear, with sandy bottom and a nice shallow walk out from the property. Even though it was May, we went for a dip. I mean, how could we resist swimming in this lake! I also had a lofty goal of swimming in 40 fresh water bodies by 40, and this was lake 40! So now I've changed the goal to see how many lakes I can swim in by 40 (3 years to go!) Lake St.John has black crappie, large mouth + small mouth bass, muskie, walleye and northern pike, making it a great spot for some fresh caught supper. While you're at the cottage, you might even be lucky enough to see the local otters! Since speaking with the owners, there is even a snapping turtle nest on the property! What a great way to connect with the local ecosystem.
The cottage itself has lots of spots for you and your gang to hang. From the big back yard, the large back deck and the living room inside the cottage - there are plenty of spots to kick back and relax. The large fire pit outside is located on the lake which is the best of both worlds when it comes to relaxation. From the crackling of the fire to the lapping of the waves of the lake it's hard to imagine a more perfect combination. The cottage has 3 bedrooms (1 king and 2 queens) as well as 2 bathrooms (one is an en suite) and everything was super tidy and clean when we checked in.
After supper we all poured a bevvie and sat on the rock wall to watch the sun dip down over the lake. It was such a great way to end an excellent day.
After the sun dipped down, we went inside and cozied up by the fireplace and dove into some games (Twister and Scattergories). There's something about playing a board game at a cottage that just feels right.
Waking up to the birds singing and having morning coffee by the lake was a great way to start the day. The lake was so peaceful and calm, I wish we had another full day there to sit and enjoy the water.
Bluebird Cottage is great spot for a girls weekend, or for a couple families to enjoy time together as well. The water is perfect for lounging as an adult and for a child as well, since it's such a shallow entry into the lake.
Highly recommend staying at Bluebird Cottage in Rama ON!
